It Law to be strengthened to deal with cyber crimes.
The Minister of State for Information Technology and Communications, Shri Shakeel Ahmed, has emphasized the great dependency on IT especially among the youth of the country. He was inaugurating the Electronics and Information Technology Exhibition –2008 (ELITEX- 2008) here today. The Minister said that ELITEX offers a platform where technology solutions can be viewed, shared and used for the betterment of the people. Responding to the suggestions made by Chairman, Parliamentary Standing Committee on Information Technology, Shri Nikhil Kumar, on the recommendations of the Committee for amendments to the IT law, the Minister said that the IT law will be strengthened to deal with data crime, transmission of pictures and other kinds of cyber crime and the department will accommodate most of the recommendations made by the Standing Committee. Referring to the e-governance project of his Department, he said 25,000 crore has been earmarked for over five years. He assured Shri Nikhil Kumar that the Community Service Centres in Bihar would come up in every block by the end of March, 2009.
Delivering the key note address, the Standing Committee Chairman on IT, Shri Nikhil Kumar, emphasized the need for creating a safer information society and preventing cyber crimes. He said the Standing Committee had spent a lot of time in examining issues relating to security of cyber space and had taken evidence from across the country in order to propose amendment to the IT law.
A compendium of 562 technologies and products developed under the Department of IT during the past years was distributed at the event. The Minister released 9 of these technologies. As of now, Department has filed IPR for 301 Patent/Copy Right/Trademark and Design related applications were filed. Out of these 157 (132 Copy Rights, 12 Patents, 13 Trade Marks and Designs) have been granted.
ELITEX-2008 is on today and tomorrow in New Delhi. The theme for ELITEX-2008 is “Securing Indian Cyber Space”.
The Department of Information Technology (DIT) has been supporting the research and development effort in the areas of electronics and information technology at various institutions. To disseminate information on these technologies and products developed through this effort among the users and the industry, the Department has been organizing, an annual event, Electronics & Information Technology Exposition (ELITEX).
Besides creating awareness about technologies developed with funding support of DIT, ELITEX-2008 aims to promote R&D industry linkages essential for the absorption of indigenous technology by the industry and for stimulating innovations. ELITEX-2008 will also showcase indigenous technology developed or being pursued in Info Security.
The Seminar Sessions at ELITEX-2008 are related to the theme “Securing Indian Cyber Space” and include sessions on Digital Signature for Authentication under the IT Act 2000; Internet Governance – Indian Perspective; Digital Innovation for Inclusive Growth; Opportunities and Challenges in Localization; Info-Security – International Practices; making NeGP Happen – Views and Perceptions; Securing Cyber Space – Issues and Challenges; Ubiquitous Computing: Linking Physical World to Computing World; Next Generation Communication and Broadband Technologies; R&D in Electronics and Enhancing Security in Your System.
The Seminar deliberations will be available online via direct webcasting on www.nic.in.
ELITEX-2008 will also focus on presentations from the States in India both in terms of participating in the seminar and exhibitions. These presentations would cover the opportunities for the industry to participate in the e-Governance initiatives in different States. These Governments are also requested to ensure the dissemination of information generated through the ELITEX-2008 in their respective States.
The Exhibition at ELITEX-2008 will showcases the technologies and products developed under the aegis of the Department of IT. The participants will get an opportunity to interact directly with the technology developers. Special arrangements have been made to facilitate discussions with the scientists involved in the development of these technologies.
