UGC National Awards presented
The University Grants Commission (UGC) National Awards for 2002 and 2003 were presented to fourteen scientist and two Sanskrit scholars here today for their outstanding contributions in their fields. The Awards were presented by Shri Arjun Singh, Minister for Human Resource Development. Congratulating the recipients of the Awards the Minister said that knowledge has to play a very significant role in this era of globalization. The UGC – Hari Om Ashram Trust National Awards for 2002 and 2003 are given to 14 scientists under five categories. Sri C.V. Raman Award for Research in Physical Sciences presented to Prof. R.S. Sirohi Director of I.I.T. New Delhi and Prof. Ajay.K.Sood of Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore for 2002-2003 respectively.Homi.J.Bhabha Award for Research in Applied Sciences given to Prof. C.V.Dharmadhikari, University of Poona, for 2002 and Prof. B.B. Chaudhari, Indian Statistical Institute, Kolkatta for 2003; Meghanand Saha Award for Research in Theoritical Sciences to Dr. Manindra Agrawala, Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur and Prof. Dilip.G.Kanhere, University of Poona; Jagdish Chandra Bose Award for Research in Life Sciences to Prof. S.K. Kulkarni of Punjab University and Prof. V.V.Radhakrishnan, Sree Chitra Tirunal Institute for Medical Sciences and Technology, Thiruvananthapuram and Dr. R.Madhubala, Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi and Dr. P.Kar, Maulana Azad Medical College, New Delhi for the year 2002 and 2003 respectively.

Prof. T.M.Vatsala, Director Technical, MCRP, Chennai and Dr. Deepak Khare, Indian Institute of Technology, Roorkee received jointly the Award to outstanding scientists/Social Scientists for interaction between Science and Society-2002 and Dr. Vijay Chandru, Indian Institute of Sciences, Bangalore and Prof. A.Jhunjhunwala, Indian Institute of Technology, Chennai received the same award for 2003.

The Minister also presented the UGC’s Veda Vyas National Sanskrit Award to renowned Sanskrit Scholars for the year 2002 and 2003. Prof. D.Prahalada Char, Ex.Vice Chancellor of Rashtriya Sanskrit Vidyapeeth, Tirupati received this award for 2002 and Prof. Keshab Chandra Dash of Shri Jagannath Sanskrit University, Puri received the award for 2003.

Veda Vyas Award is an annual national award and its consists of Rs. One lakh and a citation. UGC – Hari Om Ashram Trust National Awards to be given every year to outstanding scientists from 1974 onwards. The award consists Rs.50,000 and a citation.
