President Awards the Certificate of Honour to the Scholars of Sanskrit, Pali/Prakrit, Arabi and Persian

   Smt. Pratibha Devisingh Patil, President of India awarded  the ‘Certificate of Honour’ to the following Scholars of Sanskrit, Pali/Prakrit, Arabi and Persian in New Delhi here today:

            In addition, the President is also pleased to award the Maharishi Badrayan Vyas Samman to the following scholar of Sanskrit.

A scheme for the Award of the ‘Certificate of Honour’ was introduced in the year 1958 to honour the scholars of Sanskrit, Arabic and Persian Languages. The scheme was extended to cover Pali/Prakrit in year 1996. The distinction is conferred on the eve of Independence Day every year in recognition of the outstanding contribution of various scholars of eminence over 60 years of age, in the field of Sanskrit, Arabic, Persian or Pali/Prakrit.  This scheme envisages a monetary grant of Rs. 50,000/- per annum for life, apart from a Sanad and a shawl, which is presented by the President to each awardee.  There are 15 awards for Sanskrit, 3 each for Arabic and Persian and one for Pali/Prakrit under the scheme. 

2.         Maharshi Badrayan Vyas Samman for young scholars in the age group of 30 to 40 years in the field of Sanskrit, Pali/Prakrit, Arabic and Persian has also been introduced from the year 2002 as a part of the scheme.  This award carries an amount of Rs. 1.00 lakh as a one-time payment to each awardee along with a Sanad and a shawl, which is presented by the President of India.  There are 5 awards in Sanskrit and one each in Pali/Prakrit, Arabic and Persian under this part of the scheme.

3.         A Selection Committee had been constituted with the approval of HRM to scrutinize the proposals and make recommendations for the awards.  The constitution of the committee is as follows:-

            Vice Chancellors of Rashtriya Sanskrit Sansthan and Shri Lal Bahadur Shastri Rashtriya Sanskrit Vidyapeetha and Director, National Council for Promotion of Urdu Language are Special Invitees.  The 3 year tenure of the Committee had expired this year and the Committee has been reconstituted with the approval of Hon’ble HRM for three years i.e. upto July, 2010.
