Railways win both men’s and women’s titles in the 56th Senior National Kabaddi Championship
The Indian Railways retained the title beating Delhi (25-16) in the women section while Indian Railways won the men’s title beating Services (28-25) in the 56th Senior National Kabaddi (Men &Women) Championship here today. The Championship was held in New Delhi from 11th to 14th October 2008. Shri Rakesh Kumar in men’s section and Ms. Mamta in women’s section both from the Indian Railways have been declared best players of this Championship.
Addressing a gathering on the closing ceremony, the Minister of State for Railways Shri R.Velu has announced a cash award of Rs. One lakh to each of the both Indian Railway winning teams and Rs. 50,000/- each to runners-up i.e. Delhi (women section) and Services (men section). He also announced a cash award of Rs. 10,000/- each to Shri Rakesh Kumar and Ms. Mamta. While giving away the prizes & trophies to the winners of this event, Shri Velu said that in the last Asian Games when India entered the finals of Kabaddi and won the same it was widely appreciated all over the world. He hoped that with such high quality of game India will continue to dominate in other International events of this game. He congratulated organizers and the winners of both Men and Women sections. He said that being a very simple game, Kabaddi however, has a widespread hold among the masses and with its origin in India it is now being recognized and spreading all over the continent.
In Men section, the teams were from Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Maharashtra, Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu, Karnatka, West Bengal, Bihar, Services and Indian Railways. In Women section, the teams were from Delhi, Himachal Pradesh, Haryana, Maharashtra, Vidharba, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, West Bengal, Bihar and Indian Railways.
In this Championship, there were around 350 players/officials from 20 units. In this super league format, two pools of 5 teams each were formed. There were 20 league matches, two semi-finals and one final respectively in Men & Women section. This modification in format had been introduced by AKFI for the first time from this championship onward.
