Brief Biodata of Petroleum Minister Shri Murli Deora
Mr. Murli S. Deora who assumed charge today as the Minister of Petroleum and Natural Gas for the second term in succession, was born in 1937 in Mumbai, Maharashtra. He graduated from Mumbai University. Mr. Deora, an industrialist by profession, has been actively involved with political and social work.

Mr. Deora was one of the youngest Mayors of the city of Mumbai where he began his long innings in public life in India. A four time Parliamentarian in the Lower House and presently a Member of the Upper House (The Senate), Mr. Deora has chaired important Parliamentary Standing Committees in India such as Finance. He was elected as Chairman of Parliamentarians for Global Action and International Network of Parliamentarians. An active member of the Red Cross Movement, he was elected as Vice President of the Federation of International Red Cross and Crescent Society.

He has been involved with the Bhartiya Vidhya Bhawan, a pioneering institute committed to spread of literacy and education in India. Mr. Deora, in particular, has pursued the spread of computer literacy in rural and remote parts of India as the Vice-Chairman of Gandhi Institute of Computer Education and Information Technology.

Mr. Murli Deora is married to Mrs. Hema Deora and has two sons. Both Mr. Deora and Mrs. Hema Deora are keen bridge players. Mr. Murli Deora has been the Minister for Petroleum & Natural Gas, Government of India since February 2006.
