India Tourism
Development Corporation Limited (ITDC) was incorporated on October
1, 1966
with the objective of developing and expanding tourism infrastructure in the
country and thereby promoting India as a tourist destination. Later,
the scope of ITDC was enlarged by merging Ashok
Hotels Ltd. and Janpath Hotels Ltd. (consisting of Janpath, Lodhi and Ranjit Group of Hotels) on 28th March, 1970.
The present network of ITDC consists
of 8 Ashok Group of Hotels, 7 Joint Venture Hotels
including one incomplete project, 2 Restaurants (including one Airport
Restaurant), 4 Catering Establishments, 11 Transport Units, 1 Tourist Service
Station, 2 Duty Free shops at Goa and Coimbatore. Besides ITDC is also managing
a Hotel at Bharatpur, a Tourist Complex at Kosi and 2 Son-et-Lumeire (SEL)
Shows at Red Fort, Delhi and Sabarmati, Ahmedabad.
ITDC hotels in Delhi have been declared as the Games
Family Hotels for the Commonwealth Games 2010.
The CWG General Assembly was held at Ashok Hotel in
October 2009 which was greatly appreciated by all concerned including Mr.
Michael Fennell, President, Commonwealth Games Federation and Mr. Mike Hooper,
CEO, Commonwealth Games Federation.
The ITDC hotels in Delhi
will also be hosting the sportsmen for the Trial Games starting mid February
till August, 2010 as well as the Chef de Missions of the 71 Commonwealth
countries in the month of March, 2010.
ITDC has also been
entrusted the job of creating and operating additional hotel accommodation in
DDA Flats at Vasant Kunj. The total number of flats
are 2709 in the HIG, MIG and LIG categories and the total number of rooms are 5009.
ITDC is also undertaking the furnishing
of the Games Village near Akshardham
for Commonwealth Games 2010. The total
number of apartments are 1168 (2-5 bedrooms apartments) and the total number of
rooms are 5176.
ITDC is undertaking
extensive renovation of its properties and in the year 2008-09 an amount of
Rs.8.93 crores were spent on Hotel Janpath, Hotel Jaipur Ashok and Hotel Patliputra Ashok, Patna.
In the current year
2009-10, ITDC will be spending approximately Rs.103.43 crores
on the renovation of The Ashok, Hotel Samrat, Hotel Janpath and other
properties outside Delhi.
ITDC is also undertaking the
illumination works of 13 monuments for which the Ministry of Tourism has
sanctioned an amount of Rs.23.75 crores.
These monuments were
divided into 3 phases. Phase I consisted
of 4 monuments i.e. Sher Shah Gate, Purana Quila, Subz
Burj and Safdarjung Tomb
which has been completed.
The other 9 monuments
are Feroze Shah Kotla,
Khan-e-khana, Khama, Lal Darwaja, Chhoti
Ghumti at Green Park, Sikri Ghumti at Green park, Biraj-ka-Gumbad, Dadi Poti Ka Gumbad and Najafkhan’s Tomb which shall be completed before the
Commonwealth Games 2010.
ITDC
is also undertaking mounting of Sound & Light show (SEL) at Purana Quila and Mehrauli in New Delhi besides upgrading the SEL show at
Red Fort. Ministry of Tourism has
already sanctioned the funds for these SEL Shows i.e. Rs.386.30 lakhs for Red Fort, Rs.486.50 lakhs
for Purana Quila and
Rs.300.00 lakhs for Mehrauli.
