Sports Minister Sanctions pension to 51 Meritorious Sportspersons
Press release of Meritorious pension

            Dr. M. S Gill, Union Minister of Youth Affairs & Sports has sanctioned pension worth Rs. 4.65 crore during 2009-10 and during April-May of current financial year to 51 meritorious sportspersons,  belonging to various sports disciplines viz Athletics, Billiards & Snookers, Boxing, Badminton, Equestrian, Football, Hockey, Kabaddi, Shooting, Tennis, Volleyball, Weightlifting and Wrestling under the Scheme of Pension to Meritorious Sportspersons.  Out of 51 players, 4 will receive pension @ Rs.8000/- per month, 10 @ Rs.7000/- per month and 37 @ Rs.6000/- per month.  Pension sanctioned is for life time. Names of sportspersons approved for sanction are given below.

Under the Scheme of Pension to Meritorious Sportspersons, introduced in July 1994 with the objective of rewarding meritorious sportspersons for their outstanding achievements with life time assistance in the form of assured monthly pension, those sportspersons, who have won Gold, Silver or Bronze medals in Olympic Games, World Cup / World Championships in Olympic and Asian Games disciplines, Asian Games, Commonwealth Games and Para – Olympic Games and who have retired from active sports and are above 30 years of age, are eligible for pension varying from Rs.10,000/- per month to Rs.3000/- per month. 

At present, 540 sportspersons are getting pension, which is being paid to them through Life Insurance Corporation of India.
