50 years of Integral Coach Factory

Integral Coach Factory (ICF), a production unit of Indian Railways, has entered Golden Jubilee on completion of 50 years.  It was inaugurated on October 2, 1955 at Chennai.

            Today, ICF is the largest railway passenger coach manufacturing unit in Asia and India’s premier coach manufacturing factory.

            Landmarks of ICF are :

q       First ICF coach was flagged off on October 2, 1955.

q       ICF exported coaches to 13 Afro-Asian countries.

q       It has produced over 34,000 coaches of 200 types till date.

q       Its production capacity is 1000 coaches annually.

Aggregate value of foreign exchanges earned from export of coaches, so far, is Rs.6978.95 lakhs.

It combines speeds, comfort and safety, the three major ingredients of modern passenger transport.

It has manufactured and supplied 150 containers to the Container Corporation of India in addition to coaches.

It has manufactured the first stainless steel coach for Indian Railways.

In 1991, ICF built a fully air-conditioned metre gauge train of 21 coaches for Palace on Wheels train.  After conversion to broad gauge, ICF designed and produced coaches for Palace on Wheels within a record time of six months.

Recently, ICF manufactured new Dual Voltage Electrical Multiple Units (EMUs) with improved features for Mumbai Rail Vikas Corporation and Rail Coach Shells for Malaysia.

Workmanship and design capabilities of ICF have resulted in the state-of-the-art products, such as, new generation EMUs, new generation Diesel Multiple Units (DMUs) with aerodynamic profiling and luxury tourist coaches for Deccan Odyssey train operated by the Maharashtra Tourism Development Corporation in Maharashtra and Goa states.
