C.R.Rao National Statistics Award to Dr.Probal Chaudhuri
The National Award in Statistics, instituted by the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation in memory of Prof.C.R.Rao for the year 2004-05 has been won by Dr.Probal Chaudhuri, Professor Indian Statistical Institute, Kolkata for his outstanding contribution in the field. The C.R.Rao Award is given every alternate year to outstanding young statisticians.
The Ministry also gives another award every alternate year to senior statisticians in memory of Prof.P.V.Sukhatme. Both the awards carry a cash prize of rupees one lakh each.
Meanwhile, the most important Statistical award at international level given by the Government of India named after Prof.P.C.Mahalanobis went this time to Prof.Ben Kiregyera of Uganda. The Minister for Statistics and Programme Implementation, Shri Oscar Fernandes presented the award to Prof.Kiregyera last week in Sydney at the 55th Session of the International Statistical Institute. The Biennial award carries a cash prize of 5000 US Dollars.
