Tennis Player Somdev Kishore Devvarman receives Arjuna Award
Shri Ajay Maken, Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Youth Affairs & Sports gave Arjuna Award 2011 to Shri Somdev Kishore Devvarman for his outstanding achievements in Tennis. Shri Devvarman could not attend the ceremony held on 29th August 2011 to receive the Arjuna Award from the President as he was taking part in the US Open at that time.
Shri Devvarman won Gold medal in Men’s Singles at Commonwealth Games 2010, Gold medal in Men’s Singles at Asian Games 2010 and Gold medal in Men’s Doubles partnering with Shri Sanam Singh. He was member of the Indian team that won Davis Cup 2009 putting India back in the World Group after defeating hosts South Africa.
He was also a member of the Indian team that won Davis Cup 2010 by defeating Brazil.
He reached the career high singles ranking of 71 (April 2011), the highest by any Indian in the ATP rankings since Leander Paes’ 73 in August 2008.
